How does it work?
ViewRanger uses your actual location (calculated through GPS - the same technology used in automotive satellite navigation) and licensed data from the Ordnance Survey to calculate an accurate three dimensional panorama view of the ground terrain surrounding your location. ViewRanger then creates ViewTags on this panorama to indicate the main points-of-interest in your field of view.
These ViewTags enable you to identify thousands of features within your horizon, including hills, towns and woodland.
You can add photographs and comments (including URL links) to any point-of-interest, sharing information with friends, colleagues and other ViewRanger users. This makes ViewRanger great for holiday photos, recording sightings of flora or wildlife, and for sharing information on your favourite places.
MapPaks - Map Data on Your Handset
ViewRanger uses its visual landscape database to provide full terrain and point-of-interest coverage of geographic regions. Currently, we are releasing map data for regions of the UK. Most map data is held locally on the mobile phone handset so that ViewRanger can be used in remote locations where no mobile network signal may be available. However, when a mobile network internet connection is available then the user can access additional information on points-of-interest such as photos, comments and related websites held on the ViewRanger central server.
This edition of ViewRanger comes bundled with the UK Peak District MapPak. Other MapPaks are available at www.viewranger.com
View and Identify
ViewRanger generates a 360 degree, 3D-rendered panoramic view of your location using GPS data.
Horizontal scrolling via your phone's keypad provides easy to use, unique immersive-mapping turning your mobile into a pocket viewpoint chart.
Select
ViewTags identify key landscape features and points of interest using the latest Ordnance Survey mapping data.
Highlight and select ViewTags to gain access to more detailed information on a particular landmark or point of interest.
Explore
View photographs and textual information associated with your selected point of interest and your immediate surroundings.
Share
Uploading your own text and images to an existing ViewTag allows you to record and share experiences with the ViewRanger community.
